Why telco press is hesitant about network disaggregation

Technology is evolving at breakneck speed. To keep pace with our increasingly digital society and today’s high network demands, innovators created a solution: network disaggregation. Yet, despite its promise to reshape the telecoms landscape, the media appears relatively uninterested in this industry revolution.

Throughout this blog series, we've discussed why operators and vendors are hesitant to embark on their network disaggregation journey. Now, we'll unpack why industry press isn’t giving the approach the attention it deserves.

What are the benefits of network disaggregation?

Network disaggregation is the most significant change to telco systems since the arrival of IP networking, and it has proved successful in operators of all sizes – from Tier-1 operators like Deutsche Telekom to small regional ISPs. Telcos are turning to the approach because it enables them to avoid vendor lock-in. They can select the hardware and software that works best for their system instead of being tied to a single vendor.

"Network disaggregation is transforming the telecom industry by liberating operators from rigid, vendor-locked solutions. Whether for large-scale telcos or smaller providers, it offers unparalleled flexibility and cost-efficiency, allowing operators to tailor their networks to their unique needs. By enabling the seamless integration of diverse hardware and software, network disaggregation fosters innovation and accelerates automation. At STORDIS, we are proud to be at the forefront of this revolution, supporting operators in their journey towards open, scalable, and disaggregated networks." – Łukasz Łukowski, Chief Commerce and Communication (CSMO), STORDIS, Open Networking Experts.

The unpopular network disaggregation discussion

Network disaggregation has been part of the biggest industry conferences and trade show conversations, such as at Mobile Work Congress (MWC) in Spain. Yet, there isn't a lot of noise about it in the news. How come? There are a few factors likely contributing to this lack of coverage. These include the above-mentioned resistance from established vendors, who don’t always want to participate in a discussion that threatens their long-standing dominance.

Competing news stories are another key contributor to this gap in coverage. For example, hot topics like AI, smart homes, and the pending launch of 6G are more likely to win media space. Perhaps because network disaggregation is a gradual, incremental shift rather than a massive leap, it’s not been perceived as dramatic enough to warrant the same level of widespread media attention.

Why hesitating is dangerous

But make no mistake: network disaggregation is quietly transforming the telecoms landscape. It' may be a slow change, but it will bring monumental results. If journalists continue to overlook it, they’ll miss out on a golden opportunity to cover a major trend and keep their readers ahead of the curve.

By elevating this topic into mainstream media, journalists can foster a better understanding of its implications, educate industry professionals, and encourage further innovation. Hesitating operators and vendors might even be more persuaded to jump on board, before the ship has sailed. Industry press must present network disaggregation not just as a technical upgrade, but as a groundbreaking force for the entire telecom ecosystem.

It’s time to spread the word

Network disaggregation is happening right now. It's time to shine a light on this silent revolution and ensure the world is aware of the innovation that could define the next era of connectivity.
